Sports Flooring: General Information
Typically in a home environment, color, pattern preferences and installation options will dictate which hardwood flooring is purchased. Hardwood flooring used primarily in sports first look at which sport the floor will be used for and then builds the flooring choices from there. The needs of the athletes are the most important especially when it comes to factors like resiliency, shock absorption and traction. The subflooring for the sports floor will also be different based on the needs of the sport.
For example, gymnasiums that host basketball games and the like will often choose solid maple flooring for its hardness combined with its natural shock absorbing characteristics. Other courts may use other types of hardwood flooring depending on the needs. Sports hardwood flooring has its own manufacturing and installation guidelines that must be followed. The National Wood Flooring Association provides a link to the Maple Flooring Manufacturers Association which is considered to be the authority for standards for production and installation of sports hardwood floors. Their website can help you learn everything you pretty much ever wanted to know about sporting hardwood floors.
Sports floors require the use of unfinished hardwood flooring planks. At this time Wood Monsters only deals specifically with prefinished flooring products.
