Installations: General Rules When Applying Adhesives

There are different types of hardwood flooring adhesives for different types of hardwood flooring products and installation scenarios. Regardless of which one is being used, be sure to follow installation methods as outlined in the NWFA Installation Guidelines in order to avoid invalidating any warranties you may have received on your hardwood flooring products.

  • Properly check and prepare the subfloor to receive the adhesive. This includes addressing temperature control, cleanliness and leveling issues. You want the adhesive to stick to the subfloor, not the dirt, grime or paint stains on the subfloor.
  • Use the proper trowel to spread the adhesive. Each trowel has different sized notches in it that controls how fast and how thick the adhesive is applied.
  • Don't apply any more adhesive than you can comfortably work with in more than 15 minutes or so at a time. For example, do not apply adhesive to the entire floor and then begin installation. Apply only what you need for a small area each time, otherwise the adhesive may not work as intended.
  • If you're applying adhesive to a concrete slab, make sure it has been installed for at least 60-90 days to allow for proper “curing” time.
  • Not all adhesives have the same spread rate. If you use one type most often but have to switch brands or types, be sure to pay attention to the different spread rate and use the right kind of trowel that works best with the new adhesive.
  • Some adhesives have restrictions on how long the adhesive must be in place before you can install the hardwood flooring. Others allow you to install the hardwood flooring planks immediately after the adhesive is put down. Others require the use of heavy special rollers.
  • Always read the manufacturer's directions!
